Mellon 7’s – Tom Blyth

Between shredding his bike and playing in his death metal band, Tom Blyth found some extra time to get this quick interview done for us. Find out what Tom thinks about the BMX community, what was his worst injury and more after the jump.
Also need to give shout out to his band, Parasitized, an epic, wrathful, destructive death metal from Hull, England. I think I did crime, because I find out about his band just last week. But better late than never I guess.

1. Name, Location, Sponsors.
Thomas Reece Blyth, 29 years old from Yorkshire UK.
Ride for FBM Bikes, Odyssey / IMG Distribution and Savakas.
2. The best place to ride.
Anywhere new!
3. What do you think about BMX community?
I think overall the mainstream BMX “Community” is in a state of decline. Riding has got huge, there are a million faceless companies all competing for the same market share and a million faceless riders who can do every trick every time. It seems like style is becoming less and less important for the most part, as is individual character and as a consequence of all of that BMX has become homogenized. What was once a sanctuary for the weird and eccentric has been hijacked by energy drink companies (amongst others) and marketed to the masses.
That being said there is still a struggling underground community of companies and riders doing their own thing and fortunately I get to spend most of my time mixing in that crowd. I suppose as with most things, the BMX community is what you choose to make of it…
4. What was your worst injury on or off your bike?
I’d say a torn ACL was the worst single injury but until this year I’ve had long term ankle problems just as a result of wear and tear that have probably been most troublesome.
5. Tell a joke for kids.
I don’t think I know a joke suitable for the kids but Crandall knows a good one about a midget and an Orangutan that you should ask him about…
6. What is your opinion about mellonBMX and online BMX contests?
To be totally honest I don’t know much about it but I think anyone doing their own thing is cool.
7. Who would you like to thank?
Everyone who’s helped me out with a bike to ride or a place to stay, shared their spots or their beer and generally been cool in my direction. You know who you are… Thanks!
